With the transformation of the strategy about regional development, the development of the coal resource-based towns is one of the important issues of the world in recent years. Since the reform and opening up, the coal resource-based towns have provided China with a large number of industrial resources. They have made tremendous contributions to promote China’s modernization and accelerate the socio-economic development. As China’s first coal resource supply base, Shanxi Province now has become one of the provinces with the highest concentration of coal mining and development. Xiangyuan County is a representative of the coal resource-based counties. Irrational development and utilization of land resources, disorder of urban and rural land use have always been hindered the economic and social development of Shanxi Province, particularly in Xiangyuan County. In addition, negative effects of traditional mining, such as environmental pollution, destruction of water resources and surface subsidence, become obstacles for the sustainable development of Xiangyuan County. Therefore, the optimization of the land use structure and the adjustment of the spatial layout have been the key of land-use study in coal resource-based towns.Xiangyuan County, a typical coal resources town, is chosen as the research object. Through theoretical studies and field surveys, the thesis analyses land use structure of Xiangyuan County. By SPSS and ArcGIS soft wares, thesis conducts principal component analysis of16indicators selected from318administrative villages in Xiangyuan County. Besides the establishment of the index system and the land-use zoning, geological reference factors such as the topography, slope of the ground, river hydrology, soil, coal resources distribution, are considered. Quantitative and qualitative analysis are combined in the research of the optimization of land-use spatial layout in Xiangyuan County. In the end, the formation of "one centre and four districts" is proposed. We should strengthen resource conservation and ecological environment construction. Only in this way can we adjust the layout rationally to optimize the industrial structure of Xiangyuan County.
