The Earned Value Methodology Research Of Embedding RFID Technology Into Construction Project Control

Along with the modern society asking for rapider and more efficient projects, project complexity is on the increase. What’s more, construction project management is special because of time and space gap between site and office as well as artificial data acquisition. All these contribute to the high level of construction project failure. Facing more and more uncertainty as well as increasing complexity and failure rate, the traditional technology and project management methods gradually lost their original effectiveness.RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) is the automatic identification technology that relies on the wireless radio frequency and doesn’t need direct touch. The technology is widely used in the field of logistics, and has spread to various industries. RFID technology has the promoting effect on the project resource traceability and real-time information collection which devotes to the lean project management.Therefore, in this paper, RFID technology is embedded into resource elements (Personnel-Material-Equipment) of work package (WP) which is the bottom level of work breakdown structure (WBS) in construction project. Based on this, the earned value index system for each level of WBS is established in order to realizing the real-time and accurate monitoring. The combination of technology and management makes up the shortcomings of the traditional earned value method.The proposed method which has real-time data sources and owns control refinement feature can optimize the traditional method. What’s more, the proposed method can provide more information for causes analysis, improve the the level of project cost-schedule control, and provide reference and basis for modern construction project management.
