Water contamination is one of the biggest environmental issues in China, even all over the word. Countries have enhanced R&D and investment in water treatment technology with people paying attention to environmental protection gradually. Air floatation is one of water treatment technology, researched and extended rapidly in the word recently. At present, it’s used to dispose emulsified oil that is difficult to subside or ascents naturally, or tiny suspended particles relative density close to 1 kg/m3.Some chemical agents can increase floating efficiency and coagulants and flotation agents are used commonly. At present, coagulants, especially inorganic type have a large market share because their advantage in cost performance. Compressing diffused double layer in particles surface, neutralizing charge, adsorbing and bridging are main functions coagulants play, by these functions, suspended particles’size will be bigger. Particles’hydrophobicity is weak or hydrophilic is strong, generally need be treated by flotation agent that can improve particles’wet-ability in water. All the time, studies on air flotation mainly focus on theory and process, its little about flotation agent. Therefore, one new type of flotation agent synthesized to treat waste-waters in air flotation more efficient is necessary.Flotation agent’s mechanisms include improving wet-ability and quality of micro-bubble, demulsification and destabilization, adsorption and bridging, have been explored systematically and deep. On the basis of research above, determining the functions flotation agent should have, include containing hydrophilic, hydrophobic and cationic group. Direct at these, selecting AM and SA as hydrophilic and hydrophobic functional monomer, DMDAAC, cationic monomer, as main monomer. AM, SA can make the flotation agent shows surface activity and SA can improve wet-ability of the hydrophilic particles and cationic from DMDAAC can change electrical effect at particle or micro-bubble’s interface.According to the result of study to polymerization, deciding to use the inverse emulsion polymerization’s advantages, including moderate reaction condition, homogeneous and manageable temperature in reactive system and small amounts of side reactions and so on. According to the result of theoretical study to continuous phase, emulsifying agent and initiator in inverse emulsion polymerization, choosing mixture of kerosene and chlorinated paraffin as continuous phase, complex of OP-10and Span-80 as emulsifying agent, ’(NH4)2S2O8—NaHSO3’as initiator.Stability of emulsion is researched firstly by investigating effect from agitating rate, density of continuous phase, oil-water ratio etc, and get optional reaction condition for the stability of emulsion. On the basis of above, conducting study for influencing factors to polymerization by a series of single factor experiments and determining optional reaction condition for the inverse emulsion polymerization.Molecular structure, molecular weight and cationic degree is determined as about 3 million and 44 percent respectively, and SA and AM are part of the polymer that can be saw clearly by analyzing its infra-red spectrogram. These above show that the polymer has the functions the floatation agent should have.The floatation agent has many merits such as good dispersion and dissolution, low cost, these can be showed by applicability evaluation experiment indoor, and it can improve further the effect of air floatation. So, the floatation agent is worth to spread and apply widely.
