The adsorption of cationic polymer latex on fibers is of great significance for fiber modification and pigment dyeing. The cationic latex particles of poly(St-BA-AA-GMA)were synthesized by semi-continuous emulsion polymerization, St, AA, BA, GMA were used as the monomers, azobis isobutyl amidine hydrochloride(AIBA) as the initiator,cetyl trimethyl ammonium chloride(CTAC) as the emulsifier. The structure and property of the polymer latex and the cross-linking of the GMA structure unit were analyzed by means of DSC, SEM, DLS, Zeta potential etc. The adsorption amount of the latex on cotton fibers was measued. Cotton fabrics treated with the cationic polymer emulsion were dyed with pigments.The results show that the particle size of the P(St-BA-AA-GMA) latex is 134 nm,the Zeta potential 74.3mV and the glass transition temperature 15.5℃. The particle size of P(St-BA-AA-GMA) increased by 43 nm compared with the cationic latex particles without GMA. The cationic polymer latex have good stability of anti-centrifuging, acid resistance and storage. The polymer film formed after the acetic acid treatment has good water resistance. The adsorption amount of cationic polymer latex on the fiber is34.4mg/g. The cotton fabrics treated with the cationic P(St-BA-AA-GMA) emulsion and then dyed with pigment have higher color depth than the untreated one. Increasing the cationic P(St-BA-AA-GMA) amount results in increasing the color depth of fabric dyed.The color fastness of cotton fabrics treated with the cationic P(St-BA-AA-GMA) is better than the untreated fabrics.
