Yunjian can be comprehended as ornaments of garments in the position around neck and shoulder. Yunjian art enjoys a very long history and the earliest Yunjian can be dated back to religious clothing accessories. From Sui Tang and the Five Dynasty to the Yuan Dynasty, Yunjian was mainly the symbol of minority costumes, while in Qing Dynasty,it was widely applied in female clothes. Researches on Yunjian art were mainly carried out from perspectives of history,folklore, humanities, art and so on, but this thesis conducts an analysis from the new perspective of semiotics, aiming at utilizing the viewpoints and methods of semiotics to comb and summarize the features of Yunjian art symbols in Qing Dynasty, discussing the forms and meanings of art symbols of Yunjian, excavating the cultural value of Yunjian and proposing the positive significance of semiotics to Yunjian art. In such a way, the vacancy of folk art in semiotics theory research can thereby be made up and theoretical bases for the inheritance and development of Yunjian art can be provided. This thesis is composed of four sections. The first section introduces the basic concept of Yunjian art and semiotics and specially expounds the relationship between Yunjian art and semiotics. The second section adopts the theoretical knowledge of semiotics to analyze Yunjian art in Qing Dynasty and illustrates the connotations,analysis methods, structures and semantic features of Yunjian art symbols Qing Dynasty. The third section utilizes techniques such as combination, metaphor and symbolizing to explain the design approaches of Yunjian art symbols in Qing Dynasty. The last section discusses the inheritance and development of Yunjian art symbols and puts forward solutions.
