Cutting pick is the widely utilized cutting tools stalled into shearers when cutting cools and drilling rocks. The picks endured the high shear stress, compressive stress, impact load and temperature alternating effect when working in the poor and complicated environment, so as to be prone to failure. Service performance and occurrence of the failures of cutting pick were significantly influenced by the material composition and the corresponding composition content of the pick. At present, there exists a big gap of the life and performance between domestic and imported cutting picks. Therefore, the analysis on the effect of pick materials, influence factors and failure structure on its performance and service life is of great significance for maintaining its common cutting performance and prolonging the service life in the working process.This paper mainly conducted the following works in the support of the project of “fabrication of cutting pick with high performance and study of 3D printing technique”:(1) Experiment of the actual coal mining induced failures of cutting picks at the true spot was conducted, and made the analysis of the failure occurrence. Using scanning electron microscopy and energy spectrum analysis technology, failure modes and reasons were detailedly analyzed and discussed through microstructure analysis and material composition measurement of the cutting pick.(2) Simultaneously, based on the former failure analysis, three distinct type cutting picks with the same structure and similar dimension were studied for explaining the caused different failures from the points of material composition and chemical contents. The results showed that the main reason causing this difference was the effect induced by the additive of(TiC+TaC) and Ni on the hardness and fracture toughness of the pick. It was also demonstrated that the strengthening effect of(TiC+TaC) on the hardness and fracture toughness of the pick was significantly higher than the weakening effect induced by the similar amount of(Co+Ni).(3) Based on the varied failures showed on the different geological conditions, it was summarized briefly from the aspects of material and structure of the cutting picks for its selection principles, so as to match the picks with the actual geological condition and indirectly pronged the pick service life.
