Garbage siege has become a major phenomenon in Chinese cities. In terms of third-party enterprising services in Guangzhou for household garbage classification disposal, it has initially formed a pattern that city residents, businesses, social organizations and governments all work together to solve the issue, but there still exist several problems as follows:(1) garbage classification policy design has not been efficiently implemented; (2) garbage classification disposal lacks systematic and coordinated process; and (3) the citizens have no strong motivation to classify wastes and their habits have not yet been established.Based on the study of related literatures and the analysis of the modes in other cities regards to household garage classification disposal, in this project we carried out the following work:(1) conducted field investigations to study elements of household garbage classification disposal system in Guangzhou and to learn about the basic conditions of the research samples; (2) used the systems theory and design thinking to come up with an overall solution to the problems existing in the current household garbage classification disposal in Guangzhou; (3) iterated and practiced the solution. This work explored a beneficial way to create new system for household garbage classification disposal by using the systems theory and design thinking. Different from the traditional analytical thinking which is based on experience to make the best decision, a pioneering exploration and innovative study was carried out from a perspective of holistic thinking by putting a system into a larger one which contains the former. This work contributes to the household garbage classification disposal in Guangzhou in several aspects, which are stated as follows:(1)For the role of government in the garbage management subsystem, we proposed a top-level design principle, that is, "who produces waste, who is responsible". Only in this way can the waste be reduced at the source and the re-cyclization of resources be maximized;(2) For the transport element in the collection, transport and transit subsystem, we proposed that the essence of the problem is mixed garbage receiving and transporting. Only by designing an integrated system can the problem be solved;(3) For the element of waste classification by different groups of people in population waste generation and classification subsystem, we proposed a solution for kitchen waste disposal by using the method of service system design and put the solution into practice.(4) For the issue of reusing recyclable waste, we designed a prototype of mobile APP to help solve.(5) In addition, we attempted to make those scavengers play a greater role in waste disposal through documentaries, picture books, design of pick-up tools, and other ways. The proposed solution in this work has obtained funding from the government to put into practice, and an demonstration site was established in Guangzhou for garbage classification disposal. We believe that, this mode may be widely disseminated and replicated and thus effectively promotes solving the issue of household garbage classification disposal in Guangzhou. Also, we believe that, it has enlightening values and may be used for reference by the other two-thirds of Chinese cities troubled by garbage siege problem.
