Steel is the “food” of industry and it has close connection with the level of growth in the national economy.Producing so much steel requires a large amount of raw materials and energy,so it is the priority to operate efficiently and save energy.Because of the large of power load capacity in the steel plants,it has important significances for the steel plants energy saving to provide optimal solutions and improve the efficiency.With the development of the national economy and the advancement of modern technology,the load of the power gird grows rapidly,the increasing of impact resistance,non-linear load such as mills, mine hoists, electric arc furnaces in steel plants and the widespread application of power electronics technology make the power grid voltage waveform distortion,voltage fluctuation flicker and three-phase imbalance,etc,which have great impacts on power gird. In recent years, Domestic and foreign scholars have been dedicated to the research and practice of the above-mentioned problems, and have achieved some results.In order to improve the efficiency of the power grid and make the energy be used more efficientntly,according to the situation of the plants,taking part of SVG as the research object,the paper analyzes the necessity of SVG to carry on the power quality pollutions for the steel companies.For the purpose of studying the design and application of SVG in the strip production lines, the paper expounded the theory, the theoretical basis and the control strategies of SVG, and were also compared with SVC. By analyzing the content of designing SVG what needs to achieve dynamic reactive power compensation and harmonic control in the project. Finally, the strong project of heavenly congregation verified that SVG is reasonable and advanced.The above theoretical researches and on-site operations of engineering practice shows that a stable and reliable electric energy can save costs for steel plants,reduce losses of failure and extend the using time of equipments, and the energy-saving effect is very significant. In the national “Twelfth Five Year” energy planning has make it clear to the dynamic reactive power compensation device as the representative of the power electronics as a key development projects.
