Alkyl Acrylate-based Oil Absorption Resin: Preparation And Oil Absorption Properties

High oil absorption resin has attracted ever-growing attention because of its high oil absorbency, excellent oil retention and good absorption selectivity toward oils over water.However, it has not been widely used in practice due to its unsatisfactory oil absorption properties,high preparation cost and tedious synthetic process.In this work, three kinds of high oil absorption resin were prepared via suspension polymerization. Alkyl acrylates were chosen as the monomers due to their abundant sources and low price. Organic solvent(chloroform and toluene) and petroleum product(gasoline and diesel)were chosen as the sample oils to evaluate the oil absorption properties of these resin. The main achievements were summarized as follows:(1) A series of oil absorption resin were prepared with stearyl methacrylate(SMA) and butyl acrylate(BA) as the co-monomers, DVB as the cross-linking agent, 2, 2′-azoisobutyronitrile(AIBN) as the initiator and polyvinylalcohol(PVA) as the stabilizer. The optimized oil absorption resin PSB was obtained by investigating the effects of different polymerization technological parameters on the oil absorbency. The optimum polymerization conditions were obtained as follows: SMA:BA=8:2(w:w), DVB=0.1 wt%, AIBN=1 wt%, PVA=1 wt%, W/O=8:1(v:v). The saturated oil absorbencies of PSB toward chloroform, toluene, gasoline and diesel were measured to be 59.6, 31.8, 28.2 and 25.3 g/g respectively, with oil absorption saturation time being 2, 2.5, 3and 4 h. The oil retention of PSB toward the four oils is all above 95.9%. It can be reused at least12 times, and the saturated oil absorbencies of the 12 th use can reach more than 83.0% of the initial saturated oil absorbencies. In addition, the saturated oil absorbencies of PSB in oil-water mixture can reach more than 83.6% of the saturated oil absorbencies in pure oils.(2) Two kinds of porous oil-absorbent resin were prepared with cyclohexane and toluene as the porogen agent respectively. The effects of the type and content of porogen agent on the oil absorption properties were discussed detail. The optimized porous high oil absorption PPSB was prepared with 30 wt% toluene. The saturated oil absorbencies of PPSB toward chloroform,toluene, gasoline and diesel were measured to be 61.9, 32.6, 28.8 and 28.2 g/g respectively, withoil absorption saturation time being 1, 1.5, 2 and 3 h. The oil retention of PPSB toward the four oils is all above 95.5%. The saturated oil absorbencies of the 12 th use can reach more than 89.2%of the initial saturated oil absorbencies. In addition, the saturated oil absorbencies of PSB in oil-water mixture can reach more than 88.9% of the saturated oil absorbencies in pure oils.(3) Three kinds of inorganic-organic composite oil-absorbent resin were prepared by introducing hydrophobic nano-silica LTMS@SiO2, VTMS@SiO2and MS@SiO2into the suspension polymerization system of SMA and BA respectively. These hydrophobic nano-silica were obtained by modifying Aerosil 300(hydrophilic nano-silica) with lauryltrimethoxysilane,vinyltrimethoxysilane and hexamethyldisilazane respectively. The effects of the type and content of hydrophobic nano-silica on the oil absorbency were investigated detail. The optimized composite resin MPPSB-MS@SiO2 was prepared with 1.0 wt% MS@SiO2. The saturated oil absorbencies of MPPSB-MS@SiO2toward chloroform, toluene, gasoline and diesel were measured to be 64.4, 37.7, 33.1 and 32.1 g/g respectively, with oil absorption saturation time being30, 45, 45 and 150 min. The oil retention of PPSB toward the four oils is all above 97.4%. It can be reused at least 12 times with almost constant saturated oil absorbency. The saturated oil absorbencies toward toluene, gasoline and diesel over water are roughly equivalent to that in pure oil.The oil absorption properties of the high oil absorption resin were improved by loosening the dense structure gradually. It will find applications in removing oil spills and organic pollutants over water due to its excellent oil absorption properties.
