Face gear drive is a new type of gear transmission which has been paid much attention to in recent years. It has many advantages such as small volume, light weight, large transmission ratio, diversion- bus characteristics and is very promising in aviation field especially in military helicopter transmission. Because the tooth surface shape of face gear is very complex, how to produce high accuracy gear economically is the key to the application of the gear transmission in aviation field. This paper introduces the development history and status quo of face gear processing technology, then takes the orthogonal face gear drive as the object of study and focuses on the face gear grinding principle with Archimedes worm.This dissertation studys on the orthogonal face gear tooth surface generation principle and establishes the equation of the tooth surface with the basic method of shaping process. The undercutting and pointing phenomenon has been studied on and the influence factors of the tooth width are obtained. Three fitting formulas of the face gear tooth undercutting radius, tooth top pointing radius and the maximum tooth width are derived. According to the equation, the 3D solid model of the face gear is established by using MATLAB and Pro/E.One of the important reasons for the high cost of face gear machining is the development and manufacture of special tools. In this paper, the common Archimedes worm is used to grind the surface of the orthogonal face gear, which can reduce the processing cost of the face gear. The equation of Archimedes worm tooth surface is obtained. The coordinate system and the corresponding homogeneous transformation coordinates of the grinding tooth are established. The meshing equation of the grinding process is derived by motion method and verified by the envelope method. The tooth surface equation of the face gear is obtained and the simulation model of the face gear is established. A comparison of the grinding tooth profile and the processing tooth profile is carried out, and the results show that this scheme is feasible.The problem of undercutting is studied and the undercutting boundary line is caculated. Basing on the undercutting boundary line, the worm is modified in two ways: limiting the number of worm screw rings and using drum shape outer contour. The Archimedes worm grinding wheel is selected from the aspects of abrasive, particle size, bond, hardness, microstructure and shape. The common dressing methods are compared and the turning method is selected.
