As a large-transit and energy-saved transportation mode, urban rail transit isspreading among the metropolitans in China, and becoming an important urbaninfrastructure. For taking full advantage of the urban rail transit to support themetropolitans’ development and guaranteeing the passenger flow number, we can’tmanage the operating system alone, but also need study the mutual couplingrelationship between urban space form and rail transits. To make this study moretargeted, this study focuses space form to medium measure, that is, the urban spacearound stations.This paper first studies the TOD theory and domestic and foreign related theoriesto the relationships between rail transits and urban space, then introduces threesuccessful public transport metropolitans. Related study and practice shows that thesuccess of urban public transports has close relationship with the urban space formcharacteristic, and the urban space form characteristic varies with the social economicand technical background. The research above provides study methods for this paper’sstudy in Chongqing on one hand, on the other hand, it supports the constitution ofspecific space utilization principles.After the review, we introduce space form characteristics and the urban rail transitdevelopment and characteristics in mountain city Chongqing, then choose the rail transitline3as the specific study subject. Because of the characteristic difference betweenstation space form of different types, first, we make SPSS cluster analysis of the39stations according to the land use function around them to divide station types andinduce the characteristics of each type, then, we make further division of resident-type,center-type and hub-type stations.Based on the subdivision of stations of three types, we make deeper investigationof10typical stations, the investigation includes material space characteristics andresident activity characteristics. We urban material space study around stations from twoaspects: city functions and space organization, to be specific, the utilization of the spacearound stations, city functions, transport system and block environment characteristics.Based on the research above, through the analysis of the material space and residentactivity characteristics, combined with the development characteristics of differentstation types, we summarize the problems of the urban space around stations. Based on the summary of the problems around the stations of Chongqing railtransit, related theories and successful cases, we propose four space design principlesaround stations. To make these principles more targeted and meaningful, this paperstudies the space form design of stations of different types with the successful practicein mountain city Hong Kong. We hope this paper can provide some significant referenceto the space design around stations in Chongqing.
