Urban road intersections are an important part of the road system, driving vehicles needto complete steering at here. When vehicle passed intersection, capacity,service levels ofintersection and road safety are low than road, due to increased traffic conflict,frequentacceleration and deceleration, lane changing and other acts. Therefore intersection couldcause vehicle delay, traffic congestion and accidents more easily.The capacity, service levels,delays and security are not the same betwen different types of intersections. As commonintersection,roundabouts and signalized intersections have their own advantages anddisadvantages. Roundabouts can achieve continuous driving,small delay of vehicle and nomanagement facilities with less capacity, long bypassan and large covering. Signalizedintersections separate traffic conflict effectively.There capacity are large also caused largerdelay. Thus, different types of intersections have different applicability, when select types ofintersection, we need to evaluate different options and choose the best one. Therefore, thispaper studied applicability of roundabouts and signalized intersections and providedtheoretical basis for the intersections type selection.This paper selected primary and secondary intersected roads intersection as objection,analyzed geometric and traffic characteristics of roundabouts and signalized intersections,studied running characteristics and design elements of two types intersection; exploredinfluence mechanism of roads,traffic conditions and traffic management to intersection types,selected car flow, ratio of carts, turn left as the main influence factors to form intersectionchoice, as microscopic simulation elements of intersection; considering efficiency andsecurity, selected traffic delays and vehicle collision rate as the evaluation index,builtapplicability evaluation system of roundabouts and signalized intersections; built simulationmodel of two types intersection than carried applicability simulation combines simulationprogram based on VISSIM; and analyzed the applicability of the intersection of two types indifferent environments based on simulation results to provide decision making in u rbaninfrastructure construction department and traffic management and control department.
