With the development of economy and society, city has become a modern living area.As a result of large quantities of people pour into the city, a series of environmentalproblems also emerge, such as water pollution, air pollution and noise pollution. Underthis circumstance, modern gardening has drawn more and more attention. However,modern gardening is still at the initial exploring stage and there has been no complete andmature concept about city gardening. Meanwhile, the traditional gardening concept of“Unity of man and nature” can better adapt to the modern development. Its claim ofadvocating and respecting nature can ease the conflict between man and nature and rebuildthe unity between man and nature.This paper analyzes and summarizes the gardening method under the influence of thetraditional gardening concept of “unity between man and nature”. It finds out that theinheritance of traditional culture provides important methods and directions for moderncity gardening.This paper takes the traditional gardening concept of “unity between man and nature”as its research object. Through the analysis and summary of the use of that concept intraditional gardening, this paper tries to take the gardening method which is under theinfluence of that concept into the applied research of the modern city gardening. Bycomparative analysis, it finds out that ancient people and modern people use that conceptdifferently and there is an innovation in modern times.Firstly, this paper elaborates the concept of “unity of man and nature” both inConfucianism and Taoism, and analyses and summarizes the use of that concept intraditional gardening. It comes to the conclusion that this concept manifests itself in manyperspectives, such as in view of nature, culture, geomancy and the technique of spaceusage.Secondly, this paper, by analyzing the current situation of modern gardening,summarizes the modern view of the “unity of man and nature”. It also analyzes theenvironmental and cultural necessity of this concept in modern gardening. Moreover, byanalyzing the inheritance of the modern gardening from the traditional culture, this paperdigs out the meaning of that concept to modern city gardening.At last, the study of the inheritance of that concept from the traditional culture will bedelt with in great detail in the graduation thesis. Furthermore, some innovation will be made on the basis of both the traditional culture and the requirement of the modern citygardening, so as to offer some suggestions to the modern city gardening.
