Reverse Engineering can shorten product design cycle, reduce the cost ofproduct design, and improve the market competitiveness of the enterprises greatly. Itplays an important role in the modern product design and development. This articletakes the research of the three links of Reverse Engineering, namely data acquisition,data processing and surface reconstruction.In terms of data acquisition, the various data acquisition methods were studiedand compared. This article introduces the scanning plan, preparation before scanning,and the use skills of the3D laser scanner.In terms of data processing, two methods were studied. They are point clouddata processing method and polygon processing method. And the point cloudprocessing contains data compaction, noise, etc., polygon processing method containsextraction of characteristic line, the surface mesh adjustment, etc. Process the pointcloud data by point cloud processing, polygon processing and surface treatment anderror detection by the Geomagic Studio post-processing software.In terms of surface reconstruction, this paper introduces the three kinds ofmathematical model about the curve and surface. By comparing, the NURBS has theadvantages and inclusiveness. On the basis of NURBS model, this article introducesthe basic methods of surface reconstruction, and tells the principles and methods ofthe curve and surface smoothing, I put the theory to the practice by using CATIAsoftware to get the high quality surface model.Through the study of the surface reverse modeling of ATV body covering part, anew method combining the Geomagic and CATIA is putts forward, it uses theadvantage of the point cloud data rapid processing of Geomagic, and the feature ofsurface smoothing in CATIA to get a high quality surface model.
