In recent years, the velocity of urbanization rate is very quickly in our country, thequantity of private car is rising year by year, and it brings very serious transportation problemin big cities, in peak hours the center city’s main roads are mostly saturated, and the vehiclespeed is too low now. Traffic congestion caused vehicle travel delay increased, speed reduced,while the vehicle is consuming more fuel and discharging more pollutant emissions in a lowspeed environment than the normal drive. The congestion evokes traffic accidents more easily,while the accidents aggravate congestions to a vicious circle. The exacerbated trafficcongestion leads to the city’s huge economic losses and restrictes the further development ofthe urban economy. Therefore, we must take measures to improve the efficiency ofintersections.Setting a waiting area is one of the effective measures to improve the efficiency of theintersection, so it is the emphasis of the paper to study how to reasonably setting it. This paperstarts from the processes and methods to design phase sequences and timing plan, introducesstrategies and methods to set the left-turn waiting area, waiting area for through vehicles andversatile waiting area.This paper proposes a method to set the left-turn waiting area based on the geometry ofintersection, and analyzes the critical flow to set the left-turn waiting area, presents theprocesses and methods to design phase sequences and timing plan of left-turn waiting areaand summarizes four kinds of the most common phase sequences. It also proposes arterialcoordinate control model of left-turn waiting area based on the traditional MAXBANDmodel.This paper proposes a method to set the waiting area for through vehicles based on thegeometry of intersection, and analyzes the critical flow to set the waiting area for throughvehicles, through the analysis of capacity between before and after setting the waiting area forthrough vehicles, it concluded that it can improve the capacity of the intersection no matterwhat kind of waiting area for through vehicles to be set. This paper also studies waiting area for left-turn and through vehicles, proposes arterial coordinate control model of the waitingarea for through vehicles.This paper proposes processes and methods to versatile waiting area, concludes thatsetting a versatile waiting area can improve the capacity of the intersection by capacityanalysis, proposes methods to design phase sequences and timing plan of versatile waitingarea. Through the analysis of intersection delay between before and after setting the versatilewaiting area, it concluded that setting a versatile waiting area can reduce intersection delay.At last, this paper chooses3examples and uses VISSIM software to verify the theory,the results show that evaluations include average stopping time, average queue length andaverage delay are reduced after setting the waiting area, and the stopping time inevitablyincreased.This paper has certain innovation in the processes and methods to design phase sequences and timing plan, strategies and methods to set the left-turn waiting area, waitingarea for through vehicles and versatile waiting area, and I hope it can provide technicalreference for related reliable traffic management, and improve the status of traffic.
