In the background of urban renewal, a new round of urban renewal work has begun in early2013in the East River District with Baotou’s city development, when Premier Keqiang Li finished investigating the transformation of shantytowns in Beiliang. As a typical representation of non-historic block, issues on space reconstruction exist in East Obo Block as well.This thesis takes East Obo Block in East River District as a research object, combines with the actual project for discussing its space reconstruction, and thus opens up the thought about the space reconstruction of non-historic block. First of all, which analyzes the background and significance of the subject topics, also concepts and theories involved in research are defined. The present state of the transformation of urban renewal research and development at home and abroad is briefly described. Through the analysis of field research in East Obo block, introduces the historical survey of East Obo block, as well as analyzing the spatial characteristics of East Obo block in six major areas including business quarter, residential district, industrial district, cultural district, administrative office and religious district, and declaring the forming reasons which cover social factor, religious factor and administrative factor. Then, puts forward the target about the space reconstruction in East Obo Block, that is to say promoting new "old town-new town" space system formation, adjusting and optimizing block industries and employment space shaping new block’s neighbourhood relations. Its orientation gives priority to with life, living, characterized by religious activities, takes culture and education as the center, with the example of characteristic business about national customs blocks. In line with the overall development and protection of cultural characteristics, combined with mining block style and comprehensive recovery as a principle, puts forward four patterns of space reconstruction for East Obo Block, including: live transfer mode, industrial concentration mode, and respectively, it researches the approaches how to realize the reconstruction in four dimensions which are about living space, commercial space, cultural space and public space. The design of space reconstruction for East Obo Block is achievements on display. It analyzes the functions detailedly from the perspective of the teaching area, commercial district, dwelling district, folk custom area, leisure and tourism area, public activity area and administrative office area. It moulds the whole street by protecting the streets texture, strengthening national culture lasting appeal, adjusts the block skyline, and integrates the traffic system, redesigns the road cross section. Finally, it analyzes the constituent elements of public space from three aspects, communication landscape green space system, and rest place and detail design, drawing a conclusion that the reconstruction block could well adapt to the development of modern society by means of comparing the sequel before and after reconstruction.The paper puts forward the methods and proposes on the space reconstruction of non-historic block finally. The methods in regard to the space reconstruction of non-historic mainly includes: the selective protection, reasonable replacement, seizing the urban characteristics of the non-historic block, transforming and upgrading the format of the non-historic block, emphasizing distinguishing feature construction, cultural space and cooperation reconstruction in the development in the forth coming years. The paper aims to provide some references and suggestions for the reconstruction of Non-historic block.
