The Protection And Promotion Of Dalian Dongguan Historic Block

In the highly civilized society, the development of industry and technology is the mark of human intelligence. However, historical relics can still be seen all around the world which is especially evident in the historical streets and buildings of a city.The topic concerning historical relics is not new to either the public or the experts. There is no doubt that the public has realized the importance of the protection of the historical buildings acknowledged by the government. But we can not ignore the fact that the public has put little attention to the protection of unacknowledged historical streets and buildings which are on the verge of extinction. The big cities home and abroad have seen this serious problem and provided effective methods by the way of protection and activation. But there still remain a lot of cities which can not achieve this and even destroy those historical relics because of the economic development and little importance attached by the local government.Dongguan Street of Dalian, as a historical relic, has kept the features of the district and architecture. The buildings along the street, constructed by the Chinese, are the mixture of the architectural styles home and abroad influenced by the certain history. The district has ever been the downtown of this city and become a miniature of ethnic commercial culture.But as time goes by, there are a number of critical issues in terms of its preservation, its functional value in the city and its reconstruction. Firstly, although the public is strongly aware of the significance to protect it, there is a gap between the way of protection and the importance of urbanization. Secondly, the preservation of the buildings is limited to maintenance which is not enough because they still have the risk to be removed without the practical value. Thirdly, from the angle of history and culture, if the buildings in the street only enjoy its history with nothing to change, it will be unreasonable and not beneficial to the city’s sustainable development. Therefore, only through scientific research can those problems be solved totally by putting the fresh blood into the historical street buildings.My research aims at offering an effective and a valuable guide for the development of the Dongguan Street by taking its history, cultural and architectural mode into consideration. To be exact, it is planed to reconstruct the historical street in the way of architectural and city design and make it become lively again thus solve the long lasting problem. This paper will try to provide constructive work-plans as well as explore the possible method.
