The evolution of urban spatial structure is a long process with significant difference in its structural configuration in different historical periods. With problems in urban spatial structure development showing up gradually, such as traffic congestion, inner-city decline, housing shortage, and poor layout of urban functions, studies on evolution of urban spatial structure becoming more and more important. This paper studies the spatial structure evolvement of Ordos city to reflect its phenomenon and trends in different periods. This article firstly introduces natural and historical conditions of Ordos City, and summarizes its spatial structure of various historical periods by studying its several overall urban plannings. Through studying theories on evolution of urban spatial structure home and abroad, as well as in-depth analyzing the historical evolution of the spatial structure of Ordos City, it finds characteristics of spatial structure evolution and influencing factors of urban spatial structure in Ordos City, which provides historical evidence and theoretical guidance for optimal adjustment and rational distribution of the future expansion of the Ordos City’s space. At the same time,it can also provides reference for the development of other cities. This paper designs urban spatial structure optimization program of Ordos city and proposes two programs, one is adjust railway of through the city, another is construct the intercity rail. This paper makes recommendations on other issues, also raises the idea of urban spatial structure prospect development for Ordos City, hoping for provide a reference value for the establishment of the next version of Ordos overall urban planning.
