In this thesis, self-built housing in Hangzhou was chosen as the object of study, through extensive research and interviews, the author wants to explore characteristics inside and outside of self-built housing based on a lot of samples, and tries to summarize complete and systematic evolution of these buildings.The first chapter discusses the lack of past research and special status of self-built housing in Hangzhou, summarizes related research home and abroad and introduces two important research methods-building typology and self-organization theory with their application possibility in this article.The second chapter discusses the principles, methods and scope of the survey. The research divides residential settlements into four typical types as traditional agriculture-led villages, rental economy dominated villages, tourist villages and cottage industries dominated villages. In every sample, construction year, resident population, plan and total plan of the house was described with the design and construction process.The third and fourth chapters describe characterization and evolution of self-built housing in external form and internal form respectively. External form was divided into building placement, building massing, architectural shape, material, color and architectural details. Research of internal form comes from general pattern of traditional houses in Hangzhou, discussing the process of its evolution in horizontal and vertical levels respectively. Then interior layout features of the rental economy and tourism-oriented houses were discussed. Finally, we discuss decoration and furnishings of contemporary self-built houses. Fifth chapter discusses the evolution of self-built housing. Firstly we discuss the influence of technological progress of construction, changes in the concept of living, replacement of urban architecture and demographic changes in the context of social transformation. Then we analyze the influence of four different industrial models and government response. Finally we discuss the influence of simple aesthetic of the villagers and self-organization in the village.
