There are many complex river networks in Huaihe basin, where water systemplays an import role in the social and economic development and ecologicalenvironment protection. However, Huaihe basin is facing serious water shortage andwater pollution because of its high exploitation and utilization, which directlyendangers water ecological security and river health. For the perspective ofsustainable development, it is need to reserve enough flow for the river ecosystem,but how much the flow should be reserved becomes a hotpot in current research, andhow to guarantee ecological water requirements under the existing conditions is also akey problem. As a result, it is necessary to research the ecological water requirementand guarantee mechanism of typical waters in Huaihe.Based on summarizing calculation methods and its application scope of riverecological water requirement at home and abroad, this paper selected appropriatecalculation methods to carry out the ecological water requirement on typical reach ofHuaihe. Then combineed the calculation results and ecological problems in Huaihebasin, it built its guarantee mechanism of ecological water requirement. This paperwas mainly about the following aspects:(1)Data collection and arrangement of Huaihe basin and its typical waters. Thispaper collected monthly flow data of17typical river section over Bengbu Stationfrom1956to2008, and analyzed interannual changes of the typical river sectionsusing Linear trend estimation and the cumulative departure method. It also analyzedthe situation of water ecology, water environment and economy of Huaihe basin bycombining Water resources bulletin of Huaihe basin in1997-2011, and waterecological zoning and ecological protection and restoration measures of Huaihebasin, etc.(2)Analysis of the calculation methods of river ecological water requirement.The river ecological water requirements calculation methods and its application scopeat home and abroad were summarized and analyzed. Considering the characteristicsof Huaihe basin, adapted ecological hydraulic radius approach, tennant method and 7Q10method were selected as calculation methods of ecological water requirementsin Huaihe basin.(3)Research on ecological water requirement of typical waters in Huaihe. Usingthe upstream of Bengbu hydrologic station in Huaihe basin as the study area, itcalculated appropriate ecological flow, minimum ecological flow and self-purificationflow for17typical river sections with adapted ecological hydraulic radius approach,Tennant method and7Q10method, and verified the calculation results with month(year) reliability setting method and the smallest live level for fish Verificationshowed that the results were reasonable.(4)Establishment of guarantee mechanism of ecological water requirement inHuaihe. Based on the guarantee mechanism of water resources and ecologicalenvironment, combined with water ecological problems of Huaihe basin,management system, reserve mechanism, early warning mechanism, and ecologicalcompensation mechanism of river ecological water requirement were built. Finally,the improved method for Huaihe basin was put forward.(5)Exploitation of the calculation software of river ecological water requirement.Based on the research of river ecological water requirement calculation methods, itused MS Visual Basic6.0, object-oriented, as a development tool. Calculationsoftware of river ecological water requirement was developed and applied into thestudy area, which would provide technical support for the research on river ecologicalwater requirement.
