Horizontal directional driller (HDD) is a kind of trenchless equipment with good marketability. It is a complex electro-mechanical product with high technology. Now the design capability of domestic enterprise is still limited, while the competition between mechanical equipment enterprises is fierce. In order to survive in the market, the enterprises must accelerate their design speed. In this paper, the case-based reasoning technology is applied in the field of HDD design to reuse design resources, and an architecture of HDD design system is established. There are five parts be presented and studied in this paper:1. The paper summarized current design characteristic of HDD, proved the reasonability of using case-based design method in HDD design and introduced key steps in case-based reasoning (CBR) technology. A general case based product design process and a system framework was put forward in this paper.2. The modulization of HDD was accomplished based on function classification of HDD. An object-oriented case representation method was adopted to represent HDD case. According to HDD modulization and case representation format, a hierarchical case base structure, which comprised product case base, model case base and sub-model case base, was established to store HDD cases.3. In accordance with the hierarchical case base structure, both a hierarchical case retrieve algorithm and a hierarchical case modification algorithm was presented. The two algorithms were both carried out in the following order: product case base, model case base and sub-model case base. The case evaluation and case storage strategy were also introduced briefly.4. The paper introduced case base maintenance problem, compared several case base maintenance methods and specified the advantages of using clustering method in case base maintenance. A fuzzy Self Organizing Map clustering algorithm was applied in case base maintenance.5. A case-base product design system of HDD (HDDPDS) was established. The system can mainly realize case retrieve, case modification, case storage and case base maintenance functions.
