Exploring For "Rational Design"

In modern time, diversified trends of architectural thoughts exert the extensiveinfluences on the contemporary architecture, making changes to people’s way of lifeand aesthetic standards. Rationalism creative ideas are widely used with architects incontemporary architectural creation, showing a kind of new characteristics ofrationalism in its continuous development.As one of the most noted European architect firms, gmp has the designingheritage of the principles and styles of modernism, especially one of its branches, therationalism, which has been evolving since the Bauhaus came into being. Afterimproving efforts, gmp has developed its own precise and sequenced designing logicand romantic style of neo-rationalism, making the firm itself a rising star in theconstruction industry. In its past15-year practice in China, gmp had a large amount ofexcellent architectural works. Through field research, face-to-face visits andmultilevel analysis, I tried to prove its creative ideas and design methods. This articlehas comprehensively unfolded its rational architectural characteristics in appearance,function, structure, technique and so on.This paper, by analyzing the development of rationalism design thought, strivesto have a clear and definite knowledge on its idea and development. On this basis,analyzing and researching gmp’s thoughts, creations, researches and elaborations,especially its unique understanding of city and architecture. This is aimed at findinguseful ideas and experiences for Chinese architecture, improving its designingmethods and practice, and enlightening its future creation.
