| In October2011, Changsha ancient city wall which was deeply buried forthousands of years was found along the river, but it has to face "dismembered" destinyof "protective cutting".It has caused me to think about the importance of city story inthe urban public space.Narrative Expression is a design technique. From ancient times till now, from theWest to the East, people who have been researching on the narrative exploration neverstopped, not only literature, music, painting and film, but also the human inhabit placehas narrative exist. As time accumulation, people maybe forget the details of the story, but the narrative plot still exist, narrative charm has been spread. All of these make me figure it out in a sudden. Can we discuss the relationsbetween the source of charm in the urban public space and "narrative expression"? Ifthere are co-related, how to narrative the story and build the plot? Can it solve theproblem of "Disenchantment" in the city? Can designers extract an absolutely newmethod? With doubts, I began with this thesis. This paper referes to five questions: What problems exist in the currentexpression of the urban public space? What theory can be referenced on the narrativeand city design both from home and abroad? How to create a narrative urban publicspace? What should be paid attention to when the narrative expression leads toenchantment and vulgar charm?Based on those questions, this paper is divided into five parts.Chapter I elaborates the origin of research, research objects and related concepts. It also proposes five key questions and describes the research methods, aims and theoutlines of the research. In accordance with four kinds of ubiquitous phenomenon in the currentexpression of the urban public space: City lost memory, lost culture, emotion alimbalances and lost characteristics. Chapter II analyzes why city has disenchantment. At the same time, Chapter II elaborates the related theory of narrative and city design, and search the enlightenment about urban public space composition and design.Chapter III interprets the urban public space in cities of Copenhagen, Chengdu,Paris, Shenzhen and Bilbao by narrativ, which have major narrative features. Then, induce five types of narrative of the urban public space. Chapter IV proposes the view that introduce the narrative expression into thedesign of the urban public space, the thesis probes from three aspects: looking forstories, releasing symbols and arranging plots.Chapter V Reviewing the problems of enchantment and vulgar charm which wascaused by the narrative expression introduced into the urban public space, a commentis made on the embodiment of charm, the measure of charm and enchantment turn intovulgar charm. The author looks forward to provide academic opinions to architects, plannersand urban managers, which may give them a chance to start having a "narrative"perspective on the urban public space design and take the "story" as the key point inurban design. |
