Smart grid has been a focused topic recent years under the background of globalenergy issues and environment problems. While, as one of the most significantelement of Smart grid, demand side management (DSM) pay more attentions to theconsumption of power energy usage. Traditionally, people think highly of the powergeneration, transmission, distribution and almost ignore the consumption part which isof importance to customers. DSM transforms the role of customers from a passivereceiver to an active participant by implementing technologies and projects such asenergy efficiency, energy saving and demand response.Considering the huge potential economy profits and social benefits of DSM, thispaper put forward a hybrid mesh networks based DSM Smart Energy ManagementSystem and meanwhile shows its deployment. In this paper, the design of Smart Plugs,Smart Meters, Smart Load Control Units are illustrated and prototypes are builtaccordingly. The advantages of hybrid mesh networks are also discussed. Moreover,the system is a platform-based design where users are allowed to develop customizedapplications. The paper also shows the design and realization of a Web-based EnergyManagement Application (WEMA) which is the fundamental application of thesystem. This paper also presents the Trust-Tech aided GA-SVM algorithm and itsusage in load forecasting and meanwhile provides with case study.The system was deployed in an office building of Tianjin University to verify itsvalidity and performance. The results highlight the characteristics of system as:(1)Platform-based and modularized system architecture design;(2) Real-time energymeasurements with high time resolution and users can adjust the frequency of energymeasurement by demand;(3) Web-based energy data visualization and remote loadcontrolling which enable users to access to their data and control their equipment via avariety of tools such as a smart phone;(4) Outstanding communication network,hybrid mesh network takes advantage of several basic networks;(5) User friendlydesign, such as less wiring, plug and play equipment, favorable system extendibility,convenient user interface.
