The balance of reactive power affects the voltage level of power system,while thevoltage levels will affect the active power transmission, including the power losses in steadystate, the power transfer capacity and the stability level of the system. Especially, in case oflong term low voltage level, disasters such as voltage collapse or system breaking down mayhappen. The reactive power distribution and voltage control of the power grid havecharacteristics of both global and regional. With the increasing size and complexity in today’spower grid, there are urgent demands on the effective and global-coordinated control ofvoltage. Automatic Voltage Control (AVC) can achieve fast and real-time control of thevoltage, optimize reactive power flow. It has become an important research topic in powersystem control domain.This thesis considers the practical operation data in the Huizhou power grid, analyze andstudy the optimal application of the AVC system in the local power grids. Main contents ofthe thesis include:1) Examples of the voltage/var optimization control civil and abroad and thedevelopment and application of the AVC system are introduced. The control models, theoptimization algorithms and the achieving mean etc. about the AVC system are discussed2) The AVC system functions and control strategy based on the SCADA/EMS platformare introduced. Combining with the actual operation records since the deployment of AVC inthe Huizhou power grid, the problems discovered are summarized and the enhancementmethods are proposed.3) Based on the history data derived from the SCADA systems, the voltage/var operationstatus before and after the AVC system deployment are compared. The results show that theimproved AVC system runs sophisticated and can meet the reactive power/voltage regulationdemand. Besides, the benefits of the optimization are assessed.The practical operation shows that the optimization of the AVC system helps to enhancethe efficiency and the reliability of the Huizhou power grid. Works in this thesis providesgood reference for the operation of AVC system in local power grids.
