In engineering, concrete hollow bricks own the following characteristics: light weight, good thermal performance, excellent seismic performance and fine construction properties; although often being used in the construction of non-bearing walls concrete hollow bricks are of high strength, and can be adopted in bearing walls if they satisfy related requirements. Masonry structures made of small reinforced concrete hollow bricks have some certain advantages in housing construction. Based on this point, it is a proposition that small reinforced concrete hollow bricks could be adopted in the construction of bridge piers, and such a proposition requires a series of verification and application in actual engineering projects to evaluate its feasibility. The paper discussed the anti-seismic properties of bridge piers made of small reinforced concrete hollow bricks. Based on the theory and method of finite element analysis, the paper analyzed the dynamic properties of bridges with the mentioned piers by Midas/Civil, which is a professional bridge software, and then preliminarily discusses and analyzes the anti-seismic properties of those piers. The main work conducted in the paper are as follows:①The development status of domestic and oversea bridges, causes for the seismic damage of bridges and the characteristics of small reinforced concrete hollow bricks were introduced.②By using finite element software, Midas/Civil, the model of small reinforced concrete hollow bricks were established and the dynamic properties of bridges were analyzed.③According the related specifications, under the combination of seismic waves along the axial, vertical and transversal directions of the bridge, a response spectrum analysis was conducted on the bridge with piers made of small reinforced concrete hollow bricks to make clear the site conditions. Then a linear time history analysis was conducted on the bridge, and the results were compared with those from the response spectrum analysis. The dynamic characteristics, internal forces and displacements were compared and analyzed between bridges with ordinary reinforced concrete piers and those made of reinforced concrete hollow bricks, and then the changing situation of the structures under the action of seism were summarized.④By finite element analysis, the paper contrasted and analyzed the dynamic properties of the bridges with ordinary reinforced concrete piers and those with piers made from small reinforced concrete hollow bricks; based on response spectrum method and dynamic timing analysis, the seismic responses of the two mentioned kinds of bridges under the action of two horizontal seismic waves, which verifies that the flexibility of the bridge piers made from small reinforced concrete hollow bricks can effectively reduce the negative influences of seismic force. The research findings in the paper is of certain reference value to the seismic design of piers constructed with precast units.
