The Qiongzhou strait located between Guangdong Province and Hainan Province is a bottle neck which hampers the traffic communication between China mainland and Hainan island. To solve the problem, Yuehai railway ferry is built in 2003 to take the responsibility of the transportation task. The ferry offers great contribution to the social and economy communication between both sides of Qiongzhou strait, which is named as the "golden path in the sea".As the development of economy in China, the traffic demand through the Qiongzhou strait increases gradually, then the capacity of Yuehai railway ferry reaches saturation, the capacity now again become the bottle neck of the Strait transportation.Based on the introduction of ferry transportation tools and the operation processes, the features of strait transportation are analyzed. In order to improve the capacity of Yuehai railway ferry, include trafficability and port capacity, is studied. According to the ship diagram and transportation mode, several issues of strait transportation are studiedTo find the properly capacity improvement scheme, the transportation volume prediction is studied, associate with the current capacity status, the scheme of exist port reconstruction, scheme of new wharf construction are studied by contrastive analysis, and the result shows that new wharf construction scheme is the best solution.
