With the formation and improvement of rail transport network in cities like Beijing or Shanghai,Rail transit complex, which is rail-centric integration with other city function, not only enhances their commercial value of self, but also rapidly increases the value of the surrounding land. Being cities’ new economic growth point, the public space of rail transit complex plays a vital role in leading the construction of the region. On account of the low-quality of public space, vitality inequality and un-fully integration for rail transit complex,this thesis innovatively took the point of view of "Urban Catalysts" to analyze and solve problems. It is hoped that by taking full advantage of the large pedestrian flow brought by rail transportation hub, the space vitality can be inspired, the attractiveness of other function of the complex could be enhanced and the economic benefits would be increased. Thus, rail transit complex have the ability to feed rail transit construction, and service the city better.This thesis consists of six chapters. Chapters Ⅰ and Ⅱ is the part of related theoretical study. In chapter Ⅲ, the theory of urban catalyst is introduced to solve the present issues about the public space of rail transit complex. In chapter Ⅳ, from the perspective of urban catalyst, the affecting factors and scopes of design for public space of rail transit complex has been analyzed. The chapter Ⅴ is the core section, in which urban catalyst based design methodology has been established. It involves three parts: the selection of the catalyst factors,the excitation of catalysation and the subsequent guidance. The last chapter is the empirical study section. From the point of urban catalyst, the public space design of Beijing Xizhimen rail transit complex has been analyzed, and further optimization recommendation are also brought forward.
