As a special kind, high-rise building of traditional style has become a common phenomenon in modern city after more than a century of development with the rationalism as the main aesthetic guiding. There are mainly two kinds of design techniques for the traditional design of high-rise building:geometry methods and semiotics ideas. Many contemporary architects are trying to get rid of the shackles of aesthetic bondage and constantly explore new design methods. As a small part of all possible surfaces, developable surfaces were studied only in passing for centuries. It could be studied in greater depth until that the theory of calculus were presented in the 17th century. From the early 1990s, with the mature of digital modeling and computer graphic technology, the role of computer is becoming not the only assistance but both the assistance and decision maker. Nowadays, there are lots of books to introduce the applications and precise operation on geometry for developable surface and it have been widely used in many fields, such as shipbuilding, garment processing, and is suitable for Modeling made of leather, paper, fiber, metal plates and other plane material. Some avant-garde architects such as Hans Hollein, Frank O. Gehry and Santiago Calatrava has also been attempting to design architectural modeling with the help of developed surface. This paper attempts to research how to design architectural modeling for high-rise building based on developable surface with the help of rhino, grasshopper and script programming, which means it will generate architectural Modelings through curling a plane with a line axis, folding a plane with lines, multifolding a plane with lines and extruding a curve. The results chould be some forms of abstract architectural language structure and architectural modelings without details, providing an intuitive idea,a possibility for architects and expanding the high-rise building design methodology.Chapter 1 introduces the background, the purpose, the significance, the methods, the platform, the scope and the framework of the research. Chapter 2 is the theory and engineering applications of developable surface. Part 1 irtuduces developable surface through the theory of plane, surface and developable property. Part 2 listes and analyzes some architectural modeling cases of cruling, folding, multifolding and extruding. Part 3 determines the research scope of developable surface. The purpose is to get a series of modeling classification methods providing the guidance. Chapter 3 discusses the specific methods for generating modeling from plane by listing some examples. On the basis of the existed modelings, Chapter 4 discusses how to subdivide the epidermis to get more possibility without changing the developable property. Chapter 5 is the conclusion. It summarizes the main work of the research, looks forward to the future of the research. The whole thesis contains about 48 000 words 261 pictures and charts.
