Wharf is an important transport hub in cities as it has advantages in natural resources and geographical location. Towns along rivers can enjoy convenient water transportation. In fact, many towns are gradually developed from wharf, so as the city’s culture. Wharf landscape plays a significant role in presenting characteristic landscape style of cities. However, due to the impoundment of the Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River, many old wharves of towns along the Yangtze River in Chongqing were flooded. A series of passenger terminals were set up above the 175m elevation line to meet the needs of water transportation. In the construction of the waterfront environment, attentions are mostly paid to demonstrating modern engineering technology while regional culture inheritance is ignored and space layout technique to combine environment with old wharves is discarded. Therefore, most wharves along the Yangtze River turned to monotonous big platforms and high cut slopes. Such wharf landscape not only fails to reflect regional characteristics, but also seriously affects the urban landscape style. Thus it’s important to pass on regional culture in wharf landscape. Beautiful and meaningful wharf landscape should be built as the window to reflect characteristic landscape style. With the rise of the tourism market of Yangtze Gorges, the building of wharf landscape is getting more and more attention. This dissertation studies on wharf of Chongqing section of Yangtze River and makes an analysis of the importance to inherit regional culture in wharf landscape. Given the current status that the expression of regional cultural isn’t that clear-cut in wharf landscape of Chongqing section of the Yangtze River, a proposal is made to comprehensively apply the culture inheritance technique in three aspects:culture topic, landscape structure and elements, thus constructing wharf landscape with regional features. This paper mainly divides into three parts:First, ascertain the object and content of the research via the definition of regional culture, wharf landscape, etc; Point out the value and significance to inherit regional culture in wharf landscape; Analyse the components of regional culture and describe the main contents and characteristics of regional wharf landscape; Demonstrate the components of regional landscape via listing excellent examples home and abroad.Second, through site research, make a merit ranking of seven wharves of Chongqing section of the Yangtze River in regional landscape expression from aspects like spatial structure, architecture style, pavements, garden parergons and plants, with reference to their respective historical landscape styles. At last, summarize the advantages and shortcomings of them in exhibiting regional culture through a lateral comparison.Third, discuss and propose relevant strategies to fully inherit and demonstrate regional culture in wharf landscape through heoretical analysis and field investigation, taking consideration of concerning practical issues in wharf construction. At first, put forward the principles which should be adhered to in inheriting and presenting regional culture in wharf landscape, namely integrity, territoriality, temporal spirit, safety and ecology and that wharf landscape should be considered as a whole on the overall layout. Then, sum up the train of thought to inherit regional culture and propose that the topic of inheriting regional culture should be ascertained on the basis of excavating regional culture connotations and display regional culture through shaping landscape spatial structures and landscape elements. Finally, describe the approach to extract the theme of culture in the light of the above concept and explicitly discuss the five landscape carriers to express regional characteristics as spatial structures, architecture styles, pavements, garden parergons and plants with the way of reservation, representation, reference, refining and metaphor.according to local terrain conditions and culture. This paper figures out the current issues in wharf landscape construction through some site researches and proposes relevant strategies and advices. It aims to offering reference to integrating regional culture into wharf landscape construction, making it more attractive.
