With the development of education, school buses have been used in many schools. Large number of school buses requires to be supervised. Consequently, setting up a supervising system for school buses is imperative. The conventionally used supervising system merely provides simple functions and cannot support total supervision requirements. In this perspective, we propose a 3G-based supervising system for school buses.The system mainly contains a vehicle terminal as well as a safety supervising center. The vehicle terminal receives and executes commands from the supervising center, meanwhile collects the working status of school buses and then transmits them to the supervising center. The supervising center deals with the information from vehicle terminal, and then forwards them to the vehicle terminal. The communication between these two parts is supported by 3G wireless network.The microprocessor ARM 11 S3C6410 is selected as the main controller for the vehicle terminal, which is designed to be equipped with an acceleration acquisition module, a speed measuring module as well as a RFID module. Under WinCE6.0 platform, we also design relative software to fulfill the functionalities such as the video acquisition, H.264 coding through USB camera,3G network access and the acquisition of some vehicle information (eg. speed, acceleration, ID card number, GPS parameter and data processing).Using Visual Studio 2005, we designed the software of safety supervising center for school buses. In order to ensure a safe driving, the supervising center is able to display live monitor images and save them. The system has capability of overspeed alarm for school buses if the velocity or acceleration is over the setting threshold values, and if the school buses meet some dangerous (eg. collision, falling and rollover), the supervising center would view live images from the terminal and also transmit a set of rescue scheme. The student information could be read through RFID module when they get into the bus, and the number of passengers could be controlled by indexing the relative information from student information database. The overload could thus be avoided. When school bus is out of order or stolen, the supervising center can track and grasp the specific location timely by GPS technology. And execute control operation to the whole supervising system for school buses.Finally, the experimental test results indicate that the designed system can work normally with stable and reliable performance. This system can effectively achieve remote real-time supervising and centralization management for school buses on a unified management platform. It can also meet the demand of the school bus’ operation, so the school buses can run in an imperfect supervising system. It is of important significance for the application and promotion of school buses. Meanwhile, this system can be applied to other traffic transportation system. It has a very broad development prospects.
