In recent years, as the problems such as energy scarcity, environmental degradation, economic weak have become highlighted, the energy saving has become an inevitable requirement for sustainable ecological and economic development. Home energy management system can provide functions of information visualization and remote control, which can not only encourage users to develop energy-saving appliances to reduce electricity usage, but also can help users to monitor the operating status of home appliances and provide an effective mean for the electrical use safety.Because of the low level of Chinese smart grid, the high R&D costs of smart appliances and non-uniform of Smart appliances control standards, the development of Chinese home energy management system is not ideal. To solve these problems, this paper presents a design scheme of a home energy management system based on embedded technology. This system includes smart socket, energy gateway and PC. Smart socket achieves the functions of energy metering and data communication. Energy gateway realizes the functions of data storage of home appliances, web services of centralized management home appliance and embedded networking communication. Users can login to energy management gateway website by using the browser software of upper computer to remotely view and control appliances. Appliances join into system by smart socket, while each smart socket communicates with the energy gateway through the power line and PC communicates with energy gateway via the Internet.Firstly, this paper completed smart socket’s hardware and software design. Hardware design uses STC12C5A60S2 chip as control core, which includes the ADE7755 measurement chip-related circuit, power circuit, sampling circuit, relay control circuit and etc. Software design includes the main program, initialization, power metering, clock measure, communications processing, power-down protection, function commands, register definitions and etc.Secondly, this paper designs energy gateway by embedded Web technology, embedded database technology and PLC technology. Hardware design uses GEC2440 board at the core, which includes the PLC circuit, power circuit, memory circuit and ethernet interface circuit. Software design includes set-up of embedded arm-linux-gcc development environment, database design of boa Web server, SQLite3 database design, website design of home energy management system and etc.Finally, this paper builds a test platform to test home energy management system’s performance by using smart socket and energy gateway. Test results show that:the system response time is less than 3 seconds and the measurement average error is less than 1W. Smart sockets can measure accurately and response to user’s commands accurately. System management web with simple interfaces, which is easy to operate and fully functional, can demonstrate power information of appliances in detail, classify their power consumption and remotely control their work status. The use of smart socket in the system can not only reduce the cost of home appliance intellectualization, but also can solve the problem of non-uniform of appliances control standards, which has a strong compatibility. The innovation of the system is substituting PLC and Internet for the smart grid, which can avoid the limitation of low intelligent level of the power grid and can be widely applied in the field of home energy management in China.
