Complex structures can be divided into regular structure units by the settings of seismic joint. It will help to improve the seismic performance of the structure and reduce housing reversed. But a lot of damage showed, the width of the seismic joint determined by the requirement of the specification, the possibility of collision still exist under strong earthquake. But the seismic joint with big width would bring difficulties to design flat facade construction. Therefore, the setting of seismic joint is a dilemma of choice for structural design. The disaster caused by the seismic joint is often seen. Especially a giant earthquake happened in Ya’an in recent time trigger our thinking:What is the effect of the setting of seismic joint on structural seismic performance? At present, the research of application of seismic joint used in engineering example is not many. It is mostly confined to theoretical analysis. This paper applies Midas Building finite element analysis software to conduct the analysis of the time procedure and the calculation of reinforcement of a set of buildings in different heights with L irregular plane RC frame structure under both small earthquakes and large earthquakes separately. And by making a comparison of three index marks, including the maximum inter-story drift angel, the coefficient of torsion, the reinforcement amount between a set of model with seismic joint and the other set of model without seismic joint (other conditions are the same) to discuss the effects of seismic joint setting to the buildings in L plane and irregular RC frame structure on their seismic behavior under both small earthquakes and large earthquakes. It has been demonstrated that seismic joint setting is detrimental to their seismic behavior under both small earthquakes and large earthquakes and increases the reinforcement amount.Firstly, paper simply introduces the regulation of the width of seismic joint and the definition of irregular plane structure at home and abroad. Then we choose the example model and the seismic wave. Applies Midas Building finite element analysis program, using the response spectrum analysis and elastic time history analysis method and elastic-plastic time history analysis method to calculate and analyze the selected model. On the basis of the selection method of seismic wave and the three elements of the earthquake, determine to choose 1987, Suneww wave,1987, tar90nor wave,1985, llo10a and so on eight waves to motivate the example model from the X direction and Y direction Respectively. Comparing the maximum interlayer displacement Angle, coefficient of torsion, steel dosage of the example model under the action of two directions in eight waves. The following conclusions:(1) In the frequently occurred earthquake, set the seismic joint will increase the angle of the maximum interlayer displacement and sharply increase the maximum inter story torsion angle of the irregular part of the structure. Therefore, the seismic joint adverse to the multilayer L planar irregular frame structure. (2) In the rarely occurred earthquake, the effect of set seismic joint on the angle of the maximum interlayer displacement would be in 1 times, no other obvious regularity. But the maximum inter story torsion angle of the irregular part of the structure will increase. Therefore, the seismic joint adverse to the multilayer L planar irregular frame structure. (3) Set the seismic joint increases the steel consumption of the structure. From the economic indicators to consider, the structure which do not set seismic joint can show the seismic performance is superior. At the same time, do not set the seismic joint can save construction cost.
