The Analysis And Response Of Memory Loss In The Renewal Of Old City Center

The old center is one of the core areas, which has significant influence on the economy, politics and society of a city. It records the development track of each historical stage since the formation of the city. The superimposition of modern space on the ancient makes old center the place where city’s history, traditions, and characteristic features are concentrated. At the same time, it has also accumulated the cultural connotation of the urban development, and accommodated all aspects of social life and public activities.With the acceleration of urbanization process and the continuous improvement of the market economy system in our country, the originally declining old center has transformed into the most potential district of the region. However, the renewal of the old center gradually becomes one-sided and blind, driven by economic interests. For one hand, excessive protection makes the old center missing the opportunity for further development. Blindly update, for another, has seriously undermined the traditional physical space environment and the inherent social lifestyle, led our city or showing a bizarre perception, or all appearing as the same. And the memory held by physical environment and social life of the old city center will also fade away.Therefore, this paper attempts to re-examine the current renewal of the old city through the analysis and interpretation of urban memory. Firstly, this paper is to build a new memory system, and integrate the urban spatial elements reflecting memory characteristics into structural elements, symbolic elements, sensory elements and signified elements, which strive to cover both tangible and intangible sides, and all macro to micro levels. Secondly, based on the system above and combined with the current background, this paper will elaborate the phenomenon of memory loss during the process of urban renewal, and analyze the reasons, then conclude four types, that is, the global-type, the interfered-type, the subsided-type and the fractured-type of amnesia. Finally, it tries to put forward strategies for physical environment and social life to the continuation of urban memory. In addition, this article takes Lujia for example to set forth the specific application of the research results and corresponding countermeasures addressed above in the process of actual operation.
