With managing traffic congestion project carrying forward, the advocate and the development of green travel and low carbon transport ideas, the slow traffic(i.e.walk and bicycle traffic) has attracted more and more attention. But the actual situation is that the existing traffic infrastructure setting of slow traffic is lacking of scientific, therefore, the number of urban residents choosing bicycles traveling is less. In order to develop slow traffic rapidly, enhancing the slow traffic sharing rates, how to set the slow traffic isolation facilities reasonably to improve the slow traffic environment, but also without affecting the occupation of road resources, namely, to find out the balance point between the motor vehicle and non motor vehicle is of great importance. Therefore, this paper will working on the applicable conditions of physical isolation facilities for the slow traffic system, which will be discussed from following four parts.The first part summarizes on the slow traffic. Firstly, the definition, characteristics and division method of slow traffic are introduced. The bicycle traffic flow is analyzed, which is an important part of the slow traffic. And then it introduces the definition and classification of slow traffic facilities, and the existing problems, putting forward the necessity of setting reasonable isolation facilities between the motor vehicle and non motor vehicle.The second part analyzes the impact from motor vehicles on slow traffic. Firstly, it describes interference behavior from motor vehicles on the bicycle at the mixed traffic road, and the interference is divided into friction disturbance and block interference; then the key points are to discuss the reasons, mechanisms and consequences of different interference. Finally, through scene investigation, the velocity and the delay are chosen to analyze interference factors quantitatively.The third part studies on the suitable condition of slow traffic isolation facilities. Firstly, using VISSIM simulation software establishes a simulation model of mixed traffic road, using the evaluation index to test if the simulation model coincides with the actual situation, and modifying the simulation model by adjusting the parameters. Then, according to the research need, adjust the operating parameters repeatedly(mainly refers to the main interference factors between motor vehicles and bicycles: lane width, the total traffic volume, the mixed ratio of motor vehicle and bicycle and so on), and then obtain the simulated data of different sections. Finally, according to the VISSIM simulation results, this paper selects the critical delay as non isolation facilities setting standards, by studying the variation regular pattern of traffic delay, to find out the sudden change point of interference degree between motor vehicles and bicycles, and contrastively analyzes the applicable setting conditions of physical isolation facilities between motor vehicle and bicycle under different lane width.The fourth part studies on the optimal design for the slow traffic(mainly for the bicycle lanes). Firstly, the paper introduces the basic principle and the designing standards to improve bicycle lanes. Secondly, it studies on the coordination designing of bicycle lanes and motor vehicle lanes. At the condition that the road resources are limited, when it is needed to set physical isolation facilities, it can be carried by adjusting the motor vehicle lane width to meet the design requirements of the bicycle lane width, and analyzing on its feasibility. Finally, it studies on the coordinated design between bicycle lanes and bus stations, putting forward how to coordinate arrangements for the road resources to reduce the mutual interference between bicycles and buses at the bus station.
