Recently, with the development of urbanization, the loss of some important items often occurs in urban residential areas. Protections of citizen’s legitimate property have become a serious social security problem. Therefore, it is important to strengthen the supervision of important items so that alarm can be triggered automatically and the stolen items can be tracked. For such a purpose, an anti-theft system is developed based on GPS/GSM in this thesis.The anti-theft system developed in this thesis consists of modules of GPS, PC, GSM and STM32 which can implement automatic alarm and tracking of stolen items. The workflow of this system is as follows: the latitude-longitude pairs of the items under surveillance are firstly preset, the GPS module will trigger the GSM module if the items are stolen after which the positioning information received by the GPS module will be sent with the GSM modules to the map displaying module. On the other hand, if the items are not stolen, the GPS module will only receive the positioning information and no other operations will be implemented.This thesis first introduces related principles of GPS and GSM, after which the data format of the GPS module, especially the format of $GPRMC, is analyzed. Upon both testing and analyzing the often used AT commands, procedure oriented programming is performed for data acquisition, data parsing, and data transmission. Secondly, upon employment of the Google Map API, the positions of the items are displayed in the browser based off-line electronic map. Meanwhile, in terms of the MSComm controls, data are transmitted between the website and the GPS receiver.This thesis has finished the design of the anti-theft system, all the functions of which have been validated with experiments. The results demonstrate that our system can send alarm messages if the items are stolen. At the same time, the positions of the stolen items can be correctly displayed in the electronic map in the personal computer. Therefore, our anti-theft system has the practical value in locating important items.
