In recent years, with the rapid development of logistics industry, the application of automatic sorting system is becoming more and more widely, so the study, evaluation and optimization of automatic sorting system, have great significance in the deep understanding of the system and in-depth research and actual production.This paper, we choose the cross-belt sorter system, which belongs to the automatic sorting system, as this research’s object. First, this paper expounds the entire typical sorting-system in detail, then applies the Petri nets technology, which has a big advantage in the research field of discrete event, to make a logic level analysis to the whole system modeling, to divide the whole system into three subsystems: package system, main-cross system, unloading system, and integrate the concept of hierarchical modeling, model each subsystem in detail. After the modeling is completed, we use the analysis method of Petri net models- tree method, to verify the three basic properties of this model, they are the accessibility, boundedness, and active validation. All of these prove the validity of the model, and also illustrate the performance analysis with Petri nets on the system is feasible. In the end of this paper, we use the Auto Mod simulation software to simulate the cross-belt sorter system and the simulation model is the logical model based on Petri nets. Our simulation targets are:(1) keep the equipment’s typical layout and the goods produce’s rule unchanged, increase the equipment’s main speed, to see the system’s sorting efficiency of every speed in the same period time;(2) keep the goods produce’s rule and the equipment’s speed unchanged, to discuss changes of equipment’s layout and whether the changes of the layout can have an impact on the system’s sorting efficiency;(3) keep the equipment’s layout and equipment’s speed unchanged, increase the flow of goods to see the endurance of the whole system, as while as when and where the bottleneck occurs. Through the simulation analysis of the system and the achievement of the simulation goals, we have an in-depth analysis of the performance characteristics of the typical cross-belt sorter system, accumulate a lot of theoretical experience, which provides a foundation for the practical application and further research.
