Braking resistor has been widely used in locomotive because of its convenience and reliability. Braking resistor plays an important role in the safety of train operation. With the development of the high-speed and heavy-duty train, traditional experience design and manual analysis calculation could not meet the requirements of designing the braking resistor.Computer-based virtual prototype technology is a new, generalized CAD model. The efficiency and quality could be improved greatly on design and analysis of braking resistor by researching and using virtual prototyping technology.In the basis of comprehensive analysis on working principle, structure, design requirements and design process of braking resistor, this paper concludes and summarizes the theoretical model which involves the analysis and calculation for braking resistor. The mathematical model are related the braking resistor’s calculation are embedded in virtual design platform supported by Matlab software.Modular design is applied to design braking resistor virtual design platform of mining locomotive. The system is divided into four modules, such as brake resistor calculation,parametric design, related database and integrated interface. All these modules are intergraded into virtual design platform’s user interface that has been exploited. With the design of virtual design platform, the parametric calculation and the parametric design of braking resistor could be automatically contacted and integrated.Based on the discussing of parametric design methods, the stepts of 3D modeling and assemble modeling in 3D environment are summed up. At the same time, the 3D parametric design process of braking resistor is established, which make it easy to realize the parametric design of braking resistor. The parametric design software is developed for automatic 3D modeling and assembles modeling of braking resistor’s parts using Solidworks software.Therefore, the automatic 3D modeling and assemble modeling technology based on SolidWorks API are analyzed in detail.
