This paper is targeted on the design of the main engine remote control system by means of Programmable Logic Controller. The system is based on the ship propulsion system, which is composed of Wartsila RT-flex60C low-speed diesel engine and fixed pitch propeller. The type of the PLC is chosen in accordance with the specification requirements and the functions of the system, so does the programs writing. The PC software of system is established by using Microsoft dot NET Framework and C#language. As the marine low-speed diesel engines have advantages of the wider range of power, high thermal efficiency, good reliability etc, they are the main type of engine in the large civil transport ships. As an important part of the automatic engine room, the remote control system improves the ship’s manoeuvrability and the safety of navigation, meanwhile, it also has great influence on the reliability and economical efficiency of the main engine. Hence, it is necessary to study the marine low-speed diesel engine remote control system. The system adopts distributed architecture and achieves control function by using the ladder language and structural control language. The system consists of two PLC stations. One is used as communication station for communications among local, control room and bridge. The other is used as control station for the control function of the system. The PLC stations communicate with each other by PROFIBUS network. The monitoring software of system exchanges data between the computer and control station via PROFINET network.
