From A Constructivist Perspective, Investigate The Correlation Of Structure Strategies And Architectural Form

With the development of architecture, the humanities and the technical nature has beenwidely discussed as an important topic of concern. The theory of Tectonic explains thecorrelation of architecture technology and art, the structure and form. In the present sense ofinnovation to productivity compromise industry background, the thinking on the structuralelements tend to selective modeling. It is essential deviation from the structural design. In aword, from the theoretical perspective, we attempt to explore innovation potentials ofstructural strategy from both ideal and practical facets via a detailed analysis of fundamentalstructural principles and relevant concepts. Furthermore, the ideas, design works andcollaborative manners of representative architects and structural engineers are summarized andanalyzed, which will provide designers with workable practical methods and hence amountinto holistic design strategies in the contemporary context of disciplinary separation.The present thesis starts with the principle of structural mechanics, which illustrates thenature of structural design, i.e., the redirection of force flows. By considering the relationbetween structure and space, we break the single property of the structure as structuralelements, but emphasis the consistency of aesthetic requirements and structural elements. Thisleads to a re-interpretation of the structural rationality in traditional ideas, and expands theconceptual boundary of a structural design. Taking the structural design requirements back tothe more comprehensive architectural concept, and considering other design elementssimultaneously, we address a holistic design strategy. In practice, a summary of the specificways, which architects and structural engineers follow, reflects their negative attitudes towardsstructural problems. Based on the theoretical results, in order to achieve architectural integrity,the designers are called to collaborate with more active exchange of ideas. At the end, wesummarize our methodology from both theoretical and practical facets. We break the inertiastructural mindset and hence broaden the boundary of structural designs. Because of thediversification of the architectural system, the existence of innovation pursuing and poeticexpression of architecture implies the necessity and trends of the re-integration of architecturaland knowledge from structural disciplines.
