In the process of transportation there is usually need to count and record the amount of metal pipes quickly, especially precious pipes for oil drilling. However, at present most of the domestic situation is still using traditional artificial counting method which can’t satisfy the need of the mass production and transportation of manufacturers and logistics centers, because of the relatively low efficiency and accuracy.In order to solve this problem, this article does some research on a project of counting the amount when oil drilling pipes are through the gate, and then designs a set of pipe automatic counting system using mechatronics and computer image recognition technology. The system grabs the image of end face of pipes by using industrial camera, recognizes and counts the pipes by image processing on the computer.This system which is designed to a distributed control system uses the IPC as a PC to control various parts of hardware system, complete image processing and save data results. CCD line-scan camera can grab the image and transfer it to PC through GigE Vision. PLC and single-chip microcomputer can control the transmission mechanism which both can be used as a lower place machine, and either of them can be chosen according to the concrete situation. The data can be transmitted by serial port communication between the upper and lower computer.First of all, the article analyses the needs of the user, determines the overall design scheme of the system, and chooses hardware to set up the system. Then the article compiles the program of PLC and single chip microcomputer to complete the control of the motor by serial port communication. At last, the system software is completed by using object-oriented technology and multitask technology which has higher expandability and reusability.According to the research, the test system is built, then the software of the upper and lower computer is completed. In the experiment, both the hardware and software of the system run in good condition, and the result of recognizing and counting is satisfying.
