Energy saving and emission reduction have been the important goals in automotive industry with the aggravation of energy crisis and environmental pollution worldwide. The most direct and effective method to finish these two goals is application of the high performance light material. However, it brings a new problem how to connect two different kinds of materials. Adhesively bonding technology is found, and solves the question smoothly. Compared with traditional bonding methods, such as welding, riveting and bolting, adhesively bonding structures own many advantages including larger effective load area, uniform stress distribution, high specific strength and rigidity, well fatigue durability and designability, etc. As a consequence, adhesively bonding technology is applied in many fields more and more widely, covering aerospace and vehicle engineering. At present, most researches are focus on static performance of the single lap joint which is the simplest and most popular type. But the types of adhesively bonding are various and more complicated in real-world usage, and the entire structure’s dynamics should be considered seriously, especially a running car’s modal characteristic and rigidity characteristic.Given this, performances of the aluminum plate-steel beam adhesively bonded structure are researched in this paper, which is closer to the real car body. Firstly, its modal characteristic is studied from three aspects including theory, experiment and simulation, and compared to plate-beam bolted structure. Next, the flexural rigidity and torsional rigidity are simulated though FEM software. Obviously, adhesively bonded structure is superior to the bolted structure. At last, compare the adhesively bonded and bolted car body about the above two properties, achieving coincident results. The strengths and prospects of adhesively bonding technology are affirmed. Moreover, this research has some guiding meaning for further studies and applications.
