Slicing As A Method Of Spatial Form Operation In Architectural Design

“Slicing” is a dynamic expression of cross section consciousness, and is the mostconvenient way to study spatial form. Section, an ancient and traditional architecturaltechnical drawing method, has gradually become one of the ways to solve designproblems and explore design possibilities. Many present architects in the east and westspontaneously choose section to express and accelerate the process of architectural design.Comparing with the traditional spatial form study through plane, section is more suitablefor the architectures with complicated spatial forms and stressing the spatial verticalliquidity.This thesis researches from the section of the architecture, selecting sections or serialslices as the study object. It aims at explaining how sections or serial slices work in thedesign process as an effective spatial form operation way in the architecture design, byreading documents, analyzing cases of architects both at home and abroad, field research,doing analogical researches with other methods, and studying the application in designresearch, so as to further summarize approaches that have guiding significance on thearchitecture design itself.The whole article is divided into6chapters.The first chapter is introduction, stating the elementary knowledge of the slicing, andclarifying several basic concepts related to slicing, to give the background material of thefollowing study.The second chapter explains the connotation and study system of section It focuseson the annotation in spatial form and meaning in design of slicing that acts as the basicgraphic method, and summarizes the section graphic method from the technical level.The third chapter is about the views affecting the spatial form. It discusses thethought of section’s pitching-in design from functional level, environmental level,spiritual level, structural level and political level.The fourth chapter describes the spatial form classification of sections, to classifysections’ spatial form from the view of2D and3D.The fifth chapter talks about the spatial form operation way of sections, andsummarizes the operating method of the slicing design from the building typology. andauthenticates the theory through design research.The sixth chapter gives the conclusion and outlook, elaborating the vast prospect ofthe slicing working as a kind of design thought.
