Relay protection is the security guards of power grid, which is the important equipment to guarantee the safety and stability of power system operation, and to protect the electric power device. However, the right role of relay protection is heavily depending on its rationality of configuration scheme and validity of setting values.Along with the economy and technology development of Shandong Province in recent years, construction projects of Ji’nan power grid is increasing year by year, and with the usage of new technology and new equipment, higher request is put forward for security and stability of power grid.As the operation and setting values of Ji’nan power grid are according to the local operation experience and tradition, in addition, the structure of power grid develops, and the operation mode of power system and the grounding mode of transformer neutral point changes, so the traditional configuration scheme of relay protection has been unable to meet the requirements of grid development in many respects.According to the current situation in Ji’nan power grid, this paper refer to the general configuration and setting principles of power system protection, and analyzes the structural characteristics of Ji’nan power grid and the main problems of relay protection. Combined with common operation mode of power system and grounding mode of transformer neutral point, the general idea "strengthen the protection configuration, optimization the setting principle" is proposed. optimal configuration scheme and function configuration scheme of protection device for electrical components such as transformers and lines are proposed by different voltage levels, and appropriate protection setting principle is discussed on this basis,In terms of protection configuration, this paper mainly analyzes the optimal configuration scheme of220kV line and transformer protection and110kV transformer protection. By closely linking to the current situation of new energy development, the influence of distributed power to Ji’nan power grid is analyzed. In terms of setting principle, this paper mainly analyzes the optimal scheme of simplifying setting coordination of backup protection in Ji’nan220kV grid, as well as the optimization and adjustment of setting principles of110kV line protection. Through the organic combination of two aspects above, the main problems faced by relay protection of Ji’nan power grid are effectively solved; this can provide theoretical guidance in the design and operation of construction, reconstruction, expansion projects of power grid in the future.
