Vehicular Ad Hoc Network (VANET) is a kind of large-scale and rapidly changing novel Mobile Ad Hoc Network, which is composed of vehicle nodes, roadside units and service providers. It acts as the link of the modern city and also an essential element of the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSs), with high social significance, economic value and research prospects. Meanwhile with the further research and expending deployment of VANET, security and privacy issues have become the research hot-spot and have drawn much attention from industries. In this paper, based on the special characteristics of VANET, such as large scale, potentially high number of nodes, high mobility and frequent topology changes, no energy and no storage constraints, infrastructure and vehicular equipment support, etc. we focus on the authentication, privacy preservation and key agreement issues in VANET. By introducing biometric identification technology and self-certified public key method, the authentication and key agreement schemes for the VANET are proposed.1. A biometric-based authentication scheme. Combined with biometric identification technology, we adopt the unique physical characteristics (e.g., fingerprints) as tags of authentication. Through pressing on the fingerprint capture device installed on a vehicle, we can collect both the dynamic and static biometric information of the fingerprints and use them as authentication materials or temporary secret keys in order to complete the delivery of secret messages and the authentication of drivers and passengers. The proposed scheme achieves good security features, i.e. resilient to the impersonation attack, the stolen-verifier attack, and the replay attack, etc. Furthermore, our scheme is more practical due to the advantages of biometrics such as commonality, uniqueness, easy to collect and carry.2. An efficient anonymous batch authenticated and key agreement scheme using self-certified public keys for Internet access in VANET. Based on previous researches, we proposed an efficient anonymous batch authenticated and key agreement scheme, which is suit for one of the value-added service in VANET called Internet access. The proposed scheme can authenticate multiple requests simultaneously and negotiate session keys between service providers and vehicles meanwhile. As a result, the authentication process has no linear relationship with the number of the requesting vehicles so that our scheme can handle the large-scale issue in VANET. In addition, we take the conditional privacy into account and employ pseudoidentities as a mask to cover the real identities of vehicles. However, only the trusted authority can reveal the real identity of the malicious user if he behaves improperly or does not perform the protocol correctly.
