Tower crane features advanced structural and technical characteristics, such as the tower height, the long boom, the heavy lifting power, the broad scope of workspace and high efficiency. With these advantages, Tower crane plays a very important role in the infrastructure construction field and is extremely widely applied. On the other hand, the casualty and equipments damage accidents caused by tower crane happen frequently. The safety problem caused by tower crane draws extensive attention of our society. Our supervisory department of architecture is working on the foundation of the tower crane working status surveillance standards and will force tower crane equipping the monitoring system. Accordingly this paper provides a doable solution and establishes the corresponding software and hardware system of the monitoring equipment.The tower crane status monitoring system is a new security monitoring system, which is based on the traditional mecharical and electronic sensors, involves modern embedded processing technology, sensor technology, software technology and mobile communication technology. The ARM7 chip AT91SAM7S64 of ATMEL is used as the MCU of the data-processing board in the tower crane side, and the detection system module, wind speed and direction module, GPS and GPRS module are integrated for the hardware part and the uC/OSII operating system (OS) is used as the software part. First, the transplantation of the operating system is finished on the hardware platform AT91SAM7S64; the driver and data interface protocol of each module are developed, and the data information process is finished. The Visual Studio 2005 development platform is used in the PC side, and humanized man-machine interface is designed by Visual Basic language, and completed information records inquiry system is constructed combined with SQL database. The running status, working environment and location information of the tower crane could be shown to users on the PC side. Basing on the tower crane safety standards, user could raise alarm on illegal operations and inquiry the past records of tower crane and reproduce the work procesure of tower crane through visual animated simulation. Meanwhile, the records could be used as an important basis for responsibility of tower crane accidents.The innovative points of this subject is introducing GPRS data communication mode into the Tower Crane Monitoring System; the remote managing and monitoring terminal system has been added on the basis of the original monitoring system, so the project supervisor can monitor the working status of Tower Crane more conveniently. The field experiments reveal that the Tower Crane Status Monitoring and Controlling System has the characteristics of stable running, convenient operation, comprehensive functions, friendly interface, precisely displaying and etc. It also provides effective methods and measurements for enhancing the Tower Crane Monitoring.
