Remanufacturing is an important path to realize the sustainable development with great practical significance. Limited by the uncertainties of the "cores" and the currently reactive remanufacturing mode, it is difficult to achieve large-scale production. As an innovative model, proactive remanufacturing can effectively solve these issues. However, the current product design does not take proactive remanufacturing into account during the initial design phase, and there are few relevant design researches. According to primary research about proactive remanufacturing design, the concept and application of structure-function gradient (SFG), and the proactive remanufacturing timing control are mainly researched in this paper, which lay the foundations for the proactive remanufacturing design.First of all, compared with reactive remanufacturing, the concept of proactive remanufacturing is explained and the main characteristics of proactive remanufacturing are summarized. Combined with the life cycle theory, the benefit of proactive remanufacturing and the proactive remanufacturing timing is explained. Based on summarizing the current theory and method of remanufacturing design, the concept of proactive remanufacturing design is discussed, and the hierarchical framework with the design of product level, part level and structure level is proposed.Secondly, for the proactive remanufacturing oriented design on part level, the concept of structure-function gradient is put forward after establishing parts feature structure model. Analyzing the minimum effect and interactive overlay effect, residual strength and gradient factor are established for respectively evaluating part remanufacturability and distribution of part remanufacturability. Based on structure-function gradient, the method of part structure optimization design for proactive remanufacturing is put forward, which can not only improve the part remanufacturability, but also guarantee the equalization of remanufacturability overall distribution. And engine crankshaft is given as an instance to illustrate the optimal design process.Finally, on the basis of key part classification of product, through analyzing the relationship between product comprehensive performance inflection point and key part remanufacturing critical point, it concludes that the key point for product proactive remanufacturing timing control is the part remanufacturing critical point control. After interrelations among part design parameters, service performance, remanufacturability and remanufacturing critical point being established by regression equation and structure-function gradient, the mechanism of proactive remanufacturing timing control is discussed. Subsequently, the proactive remanufacturing timing control method is illustrated with a case taking engine crankshaft as key part.
