Since remanufacturing has great benefits, such as energy saving, materials savingand environmentally friendly, it is very significant and valuable to be researched.However, the uncertainties of the "cores" make remanufacturing complicated. To meetwith the issues which exist in reactive remanufacturing, the concept of proactiveremanufacturing is put forward in this paper. The content of proactive remanu-facturing, the concept and application of residual strength, and the determinationationof proactive remanufacturing timing are mainly researched.Firstly, according to the relationship between remanufacturing and the life cycle,the content of proactive remanufacturing is explained. And the main characteristics ofproactive remanufacturing are summarized. Base on the "bathtub curve" of productfailure rate, the reactive remanufacturing timing and proactive remanufacturing timingare compared and analyzed. Then, through the enterprise investigation on crankshafts,the assessment method of components’ failure state is described. Secondly, tocharacterize the remanufacturablity of component from the aspect of structuralstrength, the concept of residual strength is proposed. With considering the strengthcurve in “design,service and remanufacture” phases, and based on failure analysis,the hierarchical structure of residual strength is established. Then the calculationmethod of residual strength factor is presented to describe residual strengthquantificationally. Based on residual strength, the method of component optimizationdesign for remanufacturing is put forward. Meanwhile, an engine crankshaft is givenas an instance, and its initial design scheme is optimized for remanufacturing usingthis method. Finally, the basis of proactive remanufacturing is the determination ofproactive remanufacturing timing. Therefore, the determination model is establishedbased on the residual strength, remanufacturing value and technology feasibility. Then,based on the model, the proactive remanufacturing timing determination method,which consists of hierarchical decomposition, quantitative analysis, mapping modeland output, is put forward and expanded. To validate the method, the proactiveremanufacturing timing of certain engines is determined.
