Research On Fabric Renewal Of Residential Block In Hangzhou West Area

The latest "constructing cities" have rised since the1990s. It led to the emergence of many blocks of residential enclaves which main feature is gated residential area, affecting the healthy development of residential district and city. In fact, the relationship between them is like cells and body, so the attention of residential district renewal should be focused on how to blend with city.As the carrier of citizens’living space, residential block fabric is a suitable kind of study media, which reflects contact and organization of each material elements in the residential area and affects its material, economic and cultural value. Based on understanding of Chinese residential district renewal development, with the west area of Hangzhou as an example, this paper analyses urban structural fabric and block spatial fabric from seven aspects including urban road network, land use structure, scale and structure, public facilities, internal roads, public space and building fabric. Then, this paper presents strategies of "mixed-open block, gated residential unit and integrated governance" and "semi-open community" model to form the improved residential district with intensive urban branch network, mixed land use, shared public facilities, lively streets, comfortable street interface, orderly internal roads, rich public space and pleasant microclimate, making residential district and city favorably act upon each other.
