Most traditional inspection toolings are rigid structures, which only can check a specific kind of aircraft stringer. Therefore amounts of such special toolings should be designed in modern aero manufacturing enterprise in order to meet the demands, which leads to costs increasing, resources wasting, and even production schedules delaying. Objected to the specific requirements of an aircraft manufacturing enterprise, design and study on flexible inspection tooling of aircraft stringers are conducted in this paper. The main research work is summarized as follows:(1) Mechanical structure of the flexible inspection tooling is designed. According to the principle of structural design and target parameters, the overall design is completed, and then modular technology is adopted to design and detail each modular. In final, test pallets are designed.(2) Control system of the flexible inspection tooling is designed. According to the control system design guidelines for the overall design, the selection of motor parameters and the design of system security are conducted.(3) The hardware facilities is constructed. Position accuracy of the inspection tooling system is tested in order to deeply analyze the error source.(4) A software control system is developed. Furthermore each module is detailed. Finally, the motion module accurate positioning algorithm is explained and motion module damage scenario solutions are advanced.
